The Safety Wheel

ACHIA NSW is funded by the Department of Communities and Justice to support organisations to tender for and establish Domestic & Family Violence (DFV) refuges. We are working with two partners peaks, DVNSW and Homelessness NSW. ACHIA (as the Aboriginal Community-Controlled peak in the partnership) has maintained a focus on supporting Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs).

In this role, ACHIA has focused on dedicated resources and communication – specifically for ACCOs. ACHIA hosted a webinar exclusively for ACCOs, designed to create a safe space for Aboriginal organisations to learn about the funding opportunity.

One of the gaps identified by Mary Ronayne (previous Service Development Manager), was the absence of Aboriginal DFV resources. Mary’s reflection was, for example, that the safety wheel omits key elements that an Aboriginal person is thinking about when considering their safety.

My Path, My Steps

By providing Aboriginal focused resources – My Path My Steps ACHIA is assisting services, particularly ACCOs, to develop a service model that provides effective support for Aboriginal women. The key goal was a resource that makes Aboriginal women experiencing DFV feel comfortable as the experts they truly are.

My Path, My Steps is a resource for people experiencing domestic and family violence. Its underlying goal is to “shift the power” to the woman; centering her as the expert of her own circumstances; empowering her.

One of the unsaid ideas (that should be captured via the graphics) is the idea that conversations shouldn’t be longer than a cuppa. This is part of the act of service from the service provider: what kind of cuppa? how do you like your cuppa? The resources should reflect the warmth, comfort, and familiarity of one’s perfect cuppa.

Your Path, Your Steps

Your Path, Your Steps is an Aboriginal-focused resource developed by ACHIA to assist services, particularly Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), in creating service models that effectively support Aboriginal women. The primary goal of this resource is to make Aboriginal women experiencing domestic and family violence (DFV) feel empowered and recognized as the experts of their own lives.

This resource is designed to “shift the power” back to the woman, centering her as the authority on her own circumstances and empowering her decisions.

A key concept that should be conveyed through the accompanying graphics is the idea that conversations should be brief and comforting—no longer than the time it takes to enjoy a cuppa. This approach reflects the service provider’s commitment to care: understanding what kind of cuppa she prefers and how she likes it. The resources aim to embody the warmth, comfort, and familiarity of a perfect cuppa.
