National Homelessness Week – Homelessness Action Now!

Monday 4 – Sunday 10 August 2025

Homelessness Week (4–10 August 2025) is our chance to shine a spotlight on a growing crisis and push for real action. This year’s theme is “Homelessness Action Now” because the situation is getting worse, and we can’t afford to wait. It’s a week for raising awareness, sharing lived experiences, and calling on governments to step up. When services, communities and advocates come together across the country, we send a strong message: enough talk, we need change.

The housing crisis continues to hit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities hardest. On Census night in 2021, more than 25,000 First Nations people were without a home, a rise of 6.4% since 2016. Nearly 1 in 3 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults have experienced homelessness, and First Nations people make up 28% of all homelessness service users.

This reality is worsened by growing financial stress. Almost half of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience high or severe financial stress. Over half (54.5%) say it is hard to meet basic living costs, and 52.5% have no savings to fall back on. When people are stretched this thin, even one unexpected bill can push them into crisis.

These numbers reflect the ongoing impacts of colonisation, racism, intergenerational trauma and the lack of safe, secure housing. This Homelessness Week, our work in Aboriginal community housing is more vital than ever. It’s an important time to speak up about the structural changes needed to address both homelessness and financial stress, and to centre First Nations voices and community-led solutions.

As Aboriginal Community Housing Providers, you’re already part of the solution. Homelessness Week is a great time to:

  • Invite your local MP or Councillor to visit your service
  • Share tenant stories or staff reflections
  • Host a morning tea or open day
  • Post on socials using #HW2025
  • Raise community voices and calls for change

You can also register your events here and download the Homelessness Australia Supporter Pack.

We also want to thank Homelessness Australia and Homelessness NSW for their ongoing advocacy and support, in particular Homelessness NSW for backing our recent Aboriginal Women and Childrens Refuges Summit. We’re here to back you, our ACHPs, as you continue to deliver culturally safe, community-led housing for our mob.

Thank you, we are processing your submission.
Please stand by as this may take a few seconds.

Acknowledgement of Country

ACHIA NSW acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land we live, work and play on. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, for they hold the memories, traditions, culture, and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders across this beautiful nation. These lands were never ceded; it always was and always will be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands.
